About Dylan Thomas
Dylan Marlais Thomas was a Welsh poet and writer whose work includes celebrated poems such as Do not go gentle into that good night and And death shall have no dominion. He is also known for his play for voices Under Milk Wood and for stories and radio broadcasts including A Childs Christmas in Wales and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog. Thomas gained popularity during his lifetime and continued to be recognized after his death at the age of 39 in New York City, where he had been living. Born in Swansea in 1914, he left school in 1932 to work as a reporter for the South Wales Daily Post. Between 1931 and 1935, he produced approximately 200 poems, with some published during his teenage years, including his first published work, And Death Shall Have No Dominion, in 1933. Thomas lived in London, where he met Caitlin Macnamara, whom he married in 1937; they had three children. Despite his growing reputation, he struggled to earn a living through writing alone and supplemented his income with reading tours and radio broadcasts. His BBC recordings in the late 1940s brought him wider recognition, and his visits to the United States in the 1950s further increased his fame. However, his erratic behaviour and drinking worsened, and during his 1953 visit to New York, he became gravely ill and fell into a coma. He died on November 9, 1953, and was buried in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. Critics have noted his inventive use of words and imagery, and recent analyses aim to position him as a major 20th-century poet beyond the legend of a doomed poet.
