Douwe Kiela is a Dutch-American research scientist and entrepreneur specializing in artificial intelligence, with particular expertise in machine learning and natural language processing. He is currently a research scientist director at Google DeepMind. Kiela previously co-founded and served as CEO of Contextual AI, an enterprise software company that develops a platform for creating grounded AI agents tailored to enterprise knowledge bases. His career includes leading the research team at Meta AI, where he contributed to the development of the retrieval-augmented generation approach in 2020 and co-authored the foundational paper titled 'Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Knowledge-Intensive NLP Tasks.' Kiela has also served as Head of Research at Hugging Face and maintains an academic appointment as an adjunct professor in Symbolic Systems at Stanford University.
