About Douglas Rushkoff

Douglas Mark Rushkoff is an American media theorist, writer, professor, columnist, lecturer, graphic novelist, documentarian, and podcaster. He is well known for his association with early cyberpunk culture, his advocacy for open source solutions to social issues, his critique of technocapitalism, and his emphasis on reclaiming human values in a digital era. Rushkoff has contributed significantly to media theory, coining terms such as viral media, digital native, and social currency. Throughout his career, he has authored fourteen books on topics related to media, technology, and culture, in addition to several novels and graphic novels. He was the first to write a syndicated column on cyberculture for The New York Times Syndicate and has contributed to various publications including The Guardian of London, Arthur, Discover, and online platforms such as the Daily Beast and TheFeature. Currently, he serves as a Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at the City University of New York, Queens College. His previous teaching roles include positions at The New School in Manhattan and the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he created the Narrative Lab. Rushkoff has also taught online for the Maybe Logic Academy. Recognized as one of the most influential thinkers in the world by MIT Technology Review and the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute in 2012, he has been ranked sixth overall. In 2026, he was confirmed as a permanent member of the Club of Rome.
