Doug Robinson: podcast appearances and interviews

Doug Robinson, born in 1945, is an American rock climber, climbing author, and mountain guide. He is recognized for pioneering the philosophy of clean climbing in Yosemite, which encourages climbers to use removable equipment instead of fixed gear such as pitons. His 1972 climb of Half Dome without pitons was featured in National Geographic and played a significant role in raising awareness about environmentally responsible climbing practices. This approach gained further support through its inclusion in the 1972 Chouinard Equipment catalog, which was notable given that pitons were then their best-selling product. Robinson grew up in Los Altos Hills, California, and after high school, he lived in tents with John Fischer on ranch land while attending Foothill College, where he earned a degree in English. He later taught at Foothill College, offering courses in guiding, climbing, and mountaineering. In addition to his climbing achievements, Robinson served as the first president of the American Mountain Guides Association, contributing to the development and professionalization of guiding standards in the United States.
