Donnie Yen Chi-tan is a Hong Kong actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and action director. He has received multiple awards including three Golden Horse Awards and five Hong Kong Film Awards. Yen is renowned for portraying Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man in the Ip Man film series, which includes Ip Man (2008), Ip Man 2 (2010), Ip Man 3 (2015), and Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019). He also served as a co-producer of the spin-off film Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018). Born in Guangdong, Yen developed an early interest in martial arts and explored various styles such as tai chi and traditional Chinese martial arts. At 18, he auditioned for action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping in Hong Kong and secured his first lead role in the 1984 martial arts film Drunken Tai Chi. His breakthrough came with the role of General Nap-lan in Once Upon a Time in China II (1992), opposite Jet Li. Yen starred in numerous Hong Kong kung fu films including Iron Monkey (1993) and Wing Chun (1994). In 1997, he directed his first film, Legend of the Wolf. Yen expanded into American cinema with roles in Highlander: Endgame (2000), Blade II (2002), and other films such as Shanghai Knights, Rogue One, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, Mulan, and John Wick Chapter 4. He remains active in Hong Kong cinema with notable appearances in films like Hero, SPL, Flash Point, Wu Xia, and Raging Fire. Yen also portrayed the fictional character Chen Zhen in television and played a significant role in popularizing Wing Chun martial arts, contributing to the action choreography in Western movies through his production company Bullet Films.
