Dilip Kumar, born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922, was an Indian actor, writer, and film producer recognized for his significant contributions to Hindi cinema. Credited with pioneering method acting in Indian film, he was a dominant figure from the 1950s through the 1960s and is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors in Indian cinematic history. Throughout a career spanning over five decades, he appeared in 57 films, debuting in Jwar Bhata in 1944. After initial challenges, he achieved his first box office success with Jugnu in 1947 and maintained a prolific career with many top-grossing films including Shaheed, Andaz, Madhumati, Mughal-E-Azam, and Ram Aur Shyam among others. His performances in films such as Devdas, Naya Daur, and Gunga Jumna received critical acclaim. The 1970s marked a period of decline, with only Gopi in 1970 achieving widespread success. Kumar took a brief hiatus in 1976, returning with the hit film Kranti in 1981. He continued acting in significant films such as Vidhaata, Karma, and Saudagar before making his final appearance in the 1998 film Qila. Beyond his acting career, Kumar served as a member of India's Rajya Sabha from 2000 to 2006. Known for maintaining privacy about his personal life, he was married to actress Saira Banu since 1966 and was previously involved with Madhubala. He received numerous awards for his contributions, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award from India, as well as Nishan-e-Imtiaz from Pakistan.
