Richard Claxton Gregory was an American comedian, actor, writer, activist, and social critic known for his outspoken views on race and social issues. Born on October 12, 1932, he gained popularity among African-American communities in the southern United States through his comedic performances that addressed bigotry and racism. Starting in 1961, Gregory became a recognized figure in comedy clubs, appeared on television, and released comedy record albums. During the 1960s, he was actively involved in political activism, protesting against the Vietnam War and racial injustice, while also advocating for animal rights. His activism often led to multiple arrests, and he participated in many hunger strikes to support his causes. Later in his life, Gregory became a speaker and author; his autobiography sold over a million copies. He passed away from heart failure at the age of 84 in a Washington, D.C., hospital in August 2017.
