Diana Adams: podcast appearances and interviews

Diana Adams was a lawyer and LGBTQIA advocate affiliated with Sample Haus. She was born on March 29, 1926, in Staunton, Virginia, and passed away on January 10, 1993, in San Andreas, California. Throughout her lifetime, she was also known for her previous career as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet from 1950 to 1963. She was a favored muse of the renowned choreographer George Balanchine, who created several roles for her in various ballets including Western Symphony, Ivesiana, Divertimento Number 15, Agon, Stars and Stripes, Episodes, Monumentum Pro Gesualdo, and Liebeslieder Walzer. According to memoirs, Balanchine also envisioned roles for her in Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, Figure in the Carpet, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Movements for Piano and Orchestra, although she did not perform premieres of those pieces due to illness or injury.

After her dance career, Adams was involved in teaching and held leadership roles at the School of American Ballet, where she served as a teacher and dean. She was married twice, first to Hugh Laing from 1947 to 1953, and later to Ronald Bates. Adams had one child, Georgina Bates. Her varied career spanned the arts and advocacy, leaving a legacy in both ballet and community service.
