Derrick Lamar Henry Jr. is the mayor of the City of Daytona Beach. Born on January 4, 1994, he is known for his achievements in American football, where he has established a notable career as a running back. Henry is recognized for his powerful playing style and his larger build relative to most players in his position. Throughout his career, he has been successful at all levels of competition, becoming the only player to have rushed for at least 2,000 yards in a season at the high school, college, and professional levels. His high school career in Yulee, Florida, saw him set the national record for career rushing yards, breaking a record that had stood for nearly 60 years. He was a highly recruited athlete, rated as a five-star prospect by ESPN, and played college football at Alabama. During his time there, Henry broke Herschel Walker's single-season college rushing yards record in the SEC, won the 2015 Heisman Trophy, as well as the Doak Walker, Maxwell, and Walter Camp Awards, and contributed to Alabama’s national championship victory in 2015. Drafted in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, Henry became a four-time Pro Bowl selection. He led the league in rushing yards in 2019 and 2020, with the latter season making him only the second player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He later signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024, setting several franchise records and maintaining his status as one of the NFL’s all-time leaders in rushing yards and touchdowns.
