Deborah Cox is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer born on July 13, 1974, in Toronto. She began her entertainment career performing in television commercials at age 12 and participated in talent shows during her teenage years. Cox initially worked as a professional backing vocalist for Celine Dion before signing with Arista Records in 1994 after relocating to the United States. Her debut self-titled album was released in 1995, followed by her second album, One Wish, in 1998, which achieved platinum certification in the United States. The album featured the hit single Nobody's Supposed to Be Here, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for eight weeks. Cox's third album, The Morning After, was released in 2002 under J Records and marked moderate commercial success. She expanded her career into acting in the 2000s, with her film debut in Love Come Down in 2000 and her stage debut in 2004 as the lead in the Broadway musical Aida. Cox has also appeared in smaller films and musical productions including Jekyll & Hyde, Josephine, The Bodyguard, and the 2023 revival of The Wiz. Her more recent albums, Destination Moon and The Promise, were released through her independent label, Deco Recording Group. Notably, her single Let the World Be Ours Tonight became her 13th number-one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, and Billboard ranked her 23rd among the Greatest of All Time Top Dance Club Artists. She has received four Juno Awards from eight nominations and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2022.
