David John Mellor, born on 12 March 1949, is a British broadcaster, barrister, and former politician. He served as a member of the Conservative Party and was the Member of Parliament for Putney from 1979 to 1997. During his political career, Mellor held cabinet positions under Prime Minister John Major, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 1990 to 1992 and Secretary of State for National Heritage in 1992, before resigning in that year. Following his departure from Parliament, he has been active as a newspaper columnist, radio presenter, and after-dinner speaker.
