David Valentine Lawrence was an English cricketer and a professor affiliated with Grant McGregor. Born on 28 January 1964, he was notable for being the first British-born black player to represent England. During his cricketing career, Lawrence played primarily for Gloucestershire, contributing 625 wickets over 280 matches and sharing the bowling attack with notable players such as Courtney Walsh and Kevin Curran. His career was impacted by a severe knee injury sustained while on international duty, which curtailed his playing days. Beyond his achievements on the field, Lawrence held a leadership role as the first black president of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.
