About David Lammy

David Lindon Lammy, born on 19 July 1972, is a British politician who has held several prominent governmental roles, including Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor since September 2025. He previously served as Foreign Secretary from July 2024 to September 2025. As a member of the Labour Party, he has represented Tottenham as a Member of Parliament since 2000. Lammy has held various junior ministerial positions, including roles under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and has been active in public service for over two decades. Born in London, he attended The King's School in Peterborough and studied law at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. In 1994, he was called to the bar. He further pursued a Master of Laws degree at Harvard University, becoming the first black Briton to study at Harvard Law School. His early political career included a brief tenure in the London Assembly before being elected to Parliament in the 2000 Tottenham by-election. Under Tony Blair, he served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and for Constitutional Affairs, later becoming Minister of State for Culture. Gordon Brown appointed him to roles overseeing innovation and higher education. After Labour's 2010 electoral defeat, Lammy remained active in politics, endorsing candidates and participating in Labour leadership contests. He served as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and later as Shadow Foreign Secretary before re-entering government following Labour's 2024 victory. As Foreign Secretary, he contributed to negotiations involving the Chagos Islands and trade deals. In 2025, he was appointed to his current positions, notably becoming the first person of color to serve as Deputy Prime Minister.
