David Scott Mustaine, born on September 13, 1961, is an American musician best known as the co-founder, frontman, primary songwriter, and the only continuous member of the thrash metal band Megadeth. He was also the lead guitarist of Metallica from 1981 to 1983, although he did not appear on any Metallica albums. Nonetheless, he received songwriting credits on four songs from the album Kill 'Em All and two songs from Ride the Lightning. Megadeth has released seventeen studio albums and sold over 50 million records worldwide. The band has achieved critical and commercial success, including winning a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2017 for the title track of their fifteenth album, Dystopia. Born into a family of Jehovah's Witnesses, Mustaine now identifies as a born-again Christian. He has faced personal challenges including struggles with alcohol and drugs, as well as a brief battle with throat cancer in 2019. Mustaine has been married to Pamela Anne Casselberry since 1991, and together they have two children, Electra and Justis Mustaine.
