Danny Brown, born Daniel Dewan Sewell on March 16, 1981, is an American rapper, songwriter, actor, and podcaster. Raised in Detroit, he was influenced by his father, a DJ, which introduced him to hip-hop and house music. Brown began his music career in 2003, performing with local hip-hop groups while supporting himself through drug sales. In 2007, he served eight months in jail for violating his probation related to a drug case. After his release, he continued to develop his music career, releasing multiple mixtapes including Hot Soup in 2008 and Hawaiian Snow in 2010 with Tony Yayo. His debut studio album, The Hybrid, came out in 2010. Brown gained further recognition in 2011 after signing with Fool’s Gold Records and releasing the critically acclaimed mixtape XXX, which earned him awards such as Artist of the Year from Spin and the Metro Times. His 2012 single Grown Up also received significant attention. His second album, Old, released in 2013, was both critically praised and commercially successful, reaching number 18 on the Billboard 200. Brown later signed with Warp Records, releasing Atrocity Exhibition in 2016 and UKnoWhatImSayin? in 2019, which maintained critical acclaim. In 2023, he released the collaborative album Scaring the Hoes with JPEGMafia and his fifth solo album Quaranta. After a period of sobriety following rehab, Brown released his sixth album Stardust in 2025, highlighting his experimental approach to music. Known for his high-pitched vocal style and unconventional fashion, he has been called one of the most unique and eccentric figures in modern hip-hop.
