Danielle Brooks is an American actress born on September 17, 1989. She studied drama at the Juilliard School and gained prominence through her television work. Her breakthrough role was as prison inmate Tasha 'Taystee' Jefferson on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, which aired from 2013 to 2019. Brooks expanded her career to theater and film, notably making her Broadway debut as Sofia in the musical revival of The Color Purple in 2015. Her performance earned her a Tony Award nomination and a Grammy Award. She reprised her role in the 2023 film adaptation, earning nominations for an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe Award. Brooks also played the title role in the Lifetime film Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia in 2021, which led to a Primetime Emmy Award nomination as an executive producer.
