About Daniel Rock
Daniel Rock was an English Roman Catholic priest and ecclesiologist known for his contributions to liturgical studies and antiquarian research. Educated at St. Edmund's College, Old Hall, he developed an early interest in liturgy under the influence of Louis Havard and maintained a close friendship with Mark Aloysius Tierney. After studying at the English College in Rome, where he earned a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1825 and was ordained a priest in 1824, Rock returned to London to serve as an assistant priest. He later became a domestic chaplain to the Earl of Shrewsbury and resided at Alton Towers, Staffordshire. During this period, he traveled to Rome to gather materials for his influential work, Hierurgia or the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, published in 1833. He had previously authored works advocating for liturgical understanding, including a vindication of transubstantiation and a presentation of the liturgy for Sundays. In 1840, he served as chaplain to Sir Robert Throckmorton and authored his most renowned book, The Church of Our Fathers, which examined the Sarum Rite and medieval liturgical practices. This work established him as a leading authority on liturgy in England. Rock was actively involved in the movement to restore the Catholic hierarchy and was among the first canons of Southwark after its establishment in 1852. Later in life, he resided at Newick, Surrey, and near the South Kensington Museum, contributing scholarly articles to various periodicals and the catalogue of textile fabrics. He also served as President of the Old Brotherhood of the English Secular Clergy, to which he devoted much of his later years.
