About Daniel Hahn

Daniel Hahn, born on 26 November 1973, is a British writer, editor, and translator. His work includes a variety of non-fiction titles such as The Tower Menagerie, a history book, and editing The Ultimate Book Guide series for children and teenagers, with the first volume receiving the Blue Peter Book Award. His other publications include Happiness Is a Watermelon on Your Head, a picture book for children, The Oxford Guide to Literary Britain and Ireland, biographies of poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley, and a revised edition of The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature. Hahn has achieved notable recognition for his translations, including winning the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2007 for his translation of The Book of Chameleons by José Eduardo Agualusa. His translation of A General Theory of Oblivion by the same author won the 2017 International Dublin Literary Award, with Hahn earning a quarter of the prize money. His translation work extends to Pelé's autobiography, José Luís Peixoto, Philippe Claudel, María Dueñas, José Saramago, Eduardo Halfon, Gonçalo M. Tavares, among others. Hahn has held leadership roles previously as chair of the Translators Association and the Society of Authors, and as national programme director of the British Centre for Literary Translation. He currently serves on the board of trustees of various organizations dedicated to literature and free expression, including English PEN and Modern Poetry in Translation. Hahn was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2020 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature the same year. His translations have been longlisted or shortlisted for numerous international awards, including the International Booker Prize.
