Danai Jekesai Gurira is a Zimbabwean-American actress, playwright, screenwriter, producer, and activist born on February 14, 1978. She is known for her starring roles as Michonne in the AMC horror drama franchise The Walking Dead and as Okoye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her work in film has contributed to a total gross of 6.98 billion dollars, making her the seventh highest-grossing actress of all time. As a playwright, Gurira authored the play In the Continuum, which earned her an Obie Award. She also wrote The Convert, Familiar, and Eclipsed. The latter was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Play. On screen, she wrote an episode of the 2024 spin-off The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live that focused on her characters Michonne and Rick Grimes. This episode received critical acclaim, and Gurira was nominated for a Black Reel TV Award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series. Beyond her acting and writing, she has been a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador since 2018 and has founded two non-profit organizations. In 2023, she received the TIME100 Impact Award. She established Gurazoo Productions, a production company with an overall television deal with ABC Studios.
