About Cynthia Lummis

Cynthia Marie Lummis Wiederspahn is an American attorney and politician who has served as the junior United States senator from Wyoming since 2021. A member of the Republican Party, she was previously the U.S. representative for Wyoming's at-large congressional district from 2009 to 2017. Her political career includes service in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1993, as well as in the Wyoming Senate from 1993 to 1995. She also served as Wyoming State Treasurer from 1999 to 2007, after being elected to the position in 1998 and reelected without opposition in 2002. Lummis managed gubernatorial campaigns for Mary Mead in 1990 and Ray Hunkins in 2006, and participated in national political activities including serving on Bob Dole's presidential steering committee in Wyoming and chairing Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign in Wyoming. Despite an unsuccessful bid to be appointed to the United States Senate in 2007, she was elected to Congress in 2008, succeeding Barbara Cubin, and was notably the first Wyoming representative to serve on the Agriculture Committee since 1941. Throughout her tenure in the House, she chaired the Science Subcommittee on Energy and was active in various caucuses. She retired from the House in 2017 and later sought a cabinet position in President Donald Trump's administration. As a U.S. senator, she has supported efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results and promoted cryptocurrency. Currently, she holds the position of Chair of the Subcommittee on Digital Assets within the Senate Banking Committee.
