Clive Jay Davis was an American record executive, A&R executive, record producer, and lawyer. Throughout his career, he received four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 2000. From 1967 to 1973, Davis served as the president of Columbia Records, where he played a significant role in artist development and talent scouting. He founded and led Arista Records from 1974 until 2000 and subsequently established J Records. Between 2002 and 2008, he held the positions of chair and chief executive officer of the RCA Music Group, J Records, and BMG North America, respectively. Davis is credited with signing and fostering the careers of numerous influential artists, including Pink Floyd, Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, and others. He is also recognized for bringing Whitney Houston and Barry Manilow to prominence. In addition to his executive roles, Davis was the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment from 2008 until his death in 2026. His impact on the music industry extended beyond artist signings, as he helped shape the careers of many renowned performers and contributed to the development of the musical landscape over several decades.
