About Claudette Colvin

Claudette Colvin was an American nurse aide and civil rights activist known for her role in challenging bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama. On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a crowded, segregated bus. This incident occurred nine months before Rosa Parks' more widely recognized act of defiance that helped spark the Montgomery bus boycott. Colvin was one of four plaintiffs in the first federal court case against bus segregation, Browder v. Gayle, filed on February 1, 1956, by civil rights attorney Fred Gray. She testified before a United States district court, which ruled that laws enforcing bus segregation were unconstitutional. This decision was upheld by the United States Supreme Court in November 1956, leading to the end of segregation on public transportation in Montgomery. Despite her significant contribution to the civil rights movement, Montgomery's black leaders did not initially promote Colvin's efforts. Her circumstances at the time, being unmarried and pregnant, led to her case being overlooked and dropped by civil rights campaigners, who feared negative publicity. Colvin later reflected that her actions were a precursor to Rosa Parks’ more famous protest and that her story was often overlooked due to her personal circumstances. In 2021, the record of her arrest and related charges was expunged by the district court in the county where the charges had been filed, acknowledging her early role in challenging segregation.
