About Chrystia Freeland
Christina Alexandra Freeland, born on August 2, 1968, is a Canadian politician and journalist who has held several prominent roles in the Canadian federal government. She served as the tenth deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 and was a member of the Liberal Party, representing Toronto Centre from 2013 and University;Rosedale from 2015 to 2026. During her tenure as a cabinet minister, she contributed to Canada's international trade negotiations, including the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. In 2017, she was appointed minister of foreign affairs, and in 2019, she became deputy prime minister and minister of intergovernmental affairs, a role she held until 2020. She then served as minister of finance, being the first woman to hold this position, and introduced four federal budgets, including aid measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Freeland's political career included her bid in the 2025 Liberal leadership race, in which she placed second. She later served briefly as minister of transport and internal trade. In March 2025, she was appointed special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a role she held until her resignation in January 2026. That same month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed her as an unpaid economic adviser to his government. She announced her resignation from Parliament and her advisory role later that week. In July 2026, she assumed the role of warden of Rhodes House and chief executive officer of the Rhodes Trust.
