Christine Johnson Smith, known professionally as Christine Johnson, was an American contralto opera singer and actress born on September 8, 1911, and passed away on June 9, 2010. She performed at the Metropolitan Opera and other opera houses, establishing herself as a notable figure in the world of classical music. Despite her success on the opera stage, she is perhaps best remembered for creating the role of Nettie Fowler in the original Broadway production of Carousel.
