About Chrissie Wellington

Christine Ann Wellington, born on 18 February 1977, is an English former professional triathlete and four-time Ironman Triathlon World Champion. Throughout her career, she held all three significant world and championship records for ironman-distance triathlon races. She won the Ironman World Championship three consecutive years from 2007 to 2009, and after missing the 2010 race due to illness and battling severe injuries, she regained the title in 2011. Wellington was the first British athlete to win the Ironman Triathlon World Championship and remained undefeated in all thirteen of her races over the ironman distance. She achieved notable success by winning the World Championship less than a year after turning professional, a feat recognized as remarkable by the British Triathlon Federation. Wellington also set multiple course records at Challenge Roth in Bavaria, lowering her personal best to 8 hours 18 minutes 13 seconds on three occasions between 2009 and 2011. Her record stood for 12 years until Daniela Ryf surpassed it in 2023. At the time of her retirement, Wellington held the four fastest female times over the ironman distance and the most sub-nine-hour finishes. Prior to her athletic career, she worked as a British government adviser on international development and development projects in Nepal. She remains passionate about international development and supports related charities. Wellington is also an advocate for gender equality in sport, campaigning for equal prize money and opportunities for women and girls, and has been involved in initiatives like Le Tour Entier which advocates for a Women's Tour de France.
