Christopher Van Hollen Jr. is an American attorney and politician serving as the senior United States senator from Maryland. He has held this position since 2017 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to his election to the Senate, Van Hollen served as the U.S. representative for Maryland's 8th congressional district from 2003 to 2017 and as a Maryland state senator from 1995 to 2003. During his career in Congress, Van Hollen held several leadership positions, including chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2007, where he led efforts to defend vulnerable Democrats and helped secure significant gains for the Democratic Party in Congress. He was also elected as the ranking member on the Budget Committee in 2010 and was appointed to the bipartisan Committee on Deficit Reduction and to serve on the bicameral conference committee by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Van Hollen ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016, winning the Democratic primary against Donna Edwards and securing the general election with 61% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2022 with nearly 66% of the vote. Van Hollen served as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from 2017 to 2019 and became Maryland’s senior senator following Ben Cardin’s retirement in 2025. He is expected to become the dean of Maryland's congressional delegation in 2027, upon Steny Hoyer’s retirement.
