Christopher Alvin Stapleton, born on April 15, 1978, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Originally from Kentucky, he moved to Nashville in 1996 to study engineering at Vanderbilt University but left to pursue a career in music. Soon after, he signed a contract with Sea Gayle Music to write and publish his compositions. Stapleton has co-written six number-one singles on the Hot Country Songs chart for various artists, including Kenny Chesney, Josh Turner, George Strait, and Luke Bryan. His songwriting contributions extend to albums by artists such as Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, and Taylor Swift. In addition to his work as a songwriter, Stapleton was a vocalist in the bluegrass ensemble the SteelDrivers and the rock band the Jompson Brothers before establishing himself as a solo artist. His debut solo album, Traveller, released in 2015, topped the US Billboard 200 and was certified septuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. His rendition of Tennessee Whiskey from that album received diamond certification. His subsequent albums, From A Room Volume 1 and Volume 2, released in 2017, earned him awards including a Grammy for Best Country Album and a CMA Award for Album of the Year, while his 2020 album Starting Over garnered another Grammy. Throughout his career, Stapleton has received numerous awards including 11 Grammy Awards, 11 ACM Awards, and 15 CMA Awards. In 2019, he was named the ACM's Artist of the Decade. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him at number 170 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
