Christopher James Christie, born on September 6, 1962, is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 55th governor of New Jersey from 2010 to 2018. He is a member of the Republican Party and previously held the position of United States attorney for the District of New Jersey from 2002 to 2008. Christie's early political career included serving as a Morris County commissioner from 1995 to 1997 and working as a volunteer for Republican Thomas Kean's 1981 gubernatorial campaign. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1984 and earned a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. After working on George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign, Christie was appointed U.S. Attorney by President Bush, overseeing the convictions of 130 public officials. In 2009, he won the Republican primary for governor of New Jersey and subsequently defeated Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine in the general election. During his tenure, Christie was noted for efforts to cut spending, cap property tax growth, and manage recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy. He was re-elected in 2013 with a significant margin. His second term included controversies such as the Fort Lee lane closure and absences from the state.
