Charles Montgomery: podcast appearances and interviews

Charles Montgomery, born in 1968 in North Vancouver, British Columbia, is a Canadian writer and urbanist. He is known for his books The Last Heathen and Happy City, and for advising and lecturing to planners, students, and decision-makers across Canada, the United States, and England. His work integrates insights from psychology, behavioral economics, architecture, and city planning. Montgomery has collaborated with organizations such as the BMW Guggenheim Lab and the Museum of Vancouver on social experiments aimed at transforming citizens' relationships with each other and their environments. A graduate of the University of Victoria with a degree in geography, he has authored articles for various magazines and newspapers, including Dwell Magazine, Outside Magazine, Canadian Geographic, and The Globe and Mail. His magazine writing has received multiple awards, including four Western Canada Magazine Awards, a silver National Magazine Award, and the Lowell Thomas Silver Award from the American Society of Travel Writers. In addition, he received a Citation of Merit from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society for his contributions to public awareness of climate change science. His first book, The Last Heathen, which explores his search for the legacy of Victorian missionaries in Melanesia, won the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction in 2005 and the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize. His second book, Happy City, analyzes how urban design can be informed by scientific research on happiness to address environmental and social challenges by promoting green spaces and human well-being.
