Cesar Chavez

Cesario Estrada Cesar Chavez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was an American labor unionist and political activist. He co-founded the National Farm Workers Association which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to form the United Farm Workers. Chavez was involved in organizing strikes among farmworkers, most notably the Delano grape strike from 1965 to 1970. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he emphasized nonviolent resistance techniques such as picketing and boycotting to exert pressure on farm owners. Chavez incorporated Catholic symbolism into his campaigns, including public processions, Masses, and fasts. His work gained support from labor and leftist groups, but also drew surveillance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Born in Yuma, Arizona, to a Mexican American family, Chavez began his working life as a manual laborer and served two years in the US Navy before relocating to California. There he became involved with the Community Service Organization, focusing on helping laborers register to vote. As CSO's national director, he moved to Los Angeles before co-founding the NFWA. During the 1970s, Chavez expanded the union's influence outside California, though internal disagreements and controversies around immigration policies and union strategies led to a decline in membership and influence by the 1980s. His efforts contributed to the passing of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975. Posthumously, Chavez has been celebrated as a folk hero, with his birthday recognized as a federal holiday and in multiple states. However, he remains a controversial figure due to allegations and criticisms regarding his leadership style and personal conduct.
