Carole Hooven: podcast appearances and interviews

Carole K. Hooven is an evolutionary biologist and a nonresident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. She is also an associate in the laboratory of Steven Pinker. Hooven earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Antioch College and completed her doctoral studies in biological anthropology at Harvard University. She previously served as co-director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. In 2021, she published the book titled T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us. Her public statements on gender and biological sex, including comments made during a television interview in 2021, prompted backlash from faculty and students, leading to her departure from Harvard in January 2023. Her case played a role in the formation of the Harvard faculty's Council on Academic Freedom, established in 2023 to foster free inquiry and intellectual diversity. The council has around 170 members as of February 2024. In the same month, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression awarded Harvard University its lifetime censorship award, citing concerns about campus free speech and the university's handling of Hooven's case. Hooven is married to MIT philosopher Alex Byrne, and together they have expressed their views on biological sex and related topics in published op-eds, criticizing misconceptions surrounding the phrase 'sex assigned at birth'.
