Carmelo Kyam Anthony is an American former professional basketball player born on May 29, 1984. Known by the nickname 'Melo', he played 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association and is recognized as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history. Anthony is a ten-time NBA All-Star and a six-time All-NBA Team member. He played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange and was instrumental in winning a national championship as a freshman in 2003, earning the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. In 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team and was inducted twice into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025;once as an individual player and once as a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. Anthony entered the NBA draft in 2003 after one season at Syracuse and was selected with the third overall pick by the Denver Nuggets. During his time with Denver, he led the team to the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2010 and secured two division titles. His most notable achievement with the Nuggets was leading them to their first conference finals appearance since 1985 in 2009. In 2011, he was traded to the New York Knicks just before the NBA trade deadline. Anthony set a career-high 62 points in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats in 2014, which also established the Knicks’ single-game scoring record. His career also included stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers. Internationally, Anthony played for the US national team in four Olympics, winning one bronze and three gold medals, and by 2016, he was the US Olympic team’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, and games played. As of April 2016, he ranks eleventh on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
