Bret Sergeant Hart, born on July 2, 1957, is a retired professional wrestler with dual Canadian-American citizenship. He is a member of the Hart wrestling family and has a background in amateur wrestling from Ernest Manning High School and Mount Royal College. Hart is recognized for significantly influencing North American professional wrestling in the early 1990s by emphasizing technical wrestling. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and is known by the nickname the Hitman. Hart began his career in his father Stu Hart's promotion, Stampede Wrestling, in 1976 as a referee and made his in-ring debut in 1978. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he achieved championship success in the World Wrestling Federation, where he led the Hart Foundation stable. He left for World Championship Wrestling in 1997 following the Montreal Screwjob and remained there until 2000. Hart officially retired in October 2000 after being inactive since January 2000 due to a concussion. He returned sporadically to in-ring competition from 2010 to 2011 with WWE, where he also served as the general manager of Raw. Over his career, he headlined major events such as WrestleMania and Starrcade and held championship titles across five decades, totaling 32 titles, including seven world championships. Hart is a multiple Hall of Fame inductee and was the winner of the 1994 Royal Rumble. Beyond wrestling, he has appeared in films and television, contributed to journalism, founded the Calgary Hitmen hockey team, and engaged in charitable work related to stroke recovery and cancer awareness.
