About Bob Carr

Robert John Carr, born on September 28, 1947, in Sydney, is an Australian retired politician and journalist. He served as the 39th premier of New South Wales from 1995 to 2005, leading the Australian Labor Party's New South Wales branch. Prior to his premiership, Carr worked as a journalist and was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1983. He became a cabinet minister in 1984, serving under Neville Wran and Barrie Unsworth until the Labor government was defeated in 1988. Carr then replaced Unsworth as leader of the opposition, leading the party in the 1991 election and ultimately becoming premier after a narrow victory in 1995. During his tenure as premier, Carr emphasized conservation and utilized public-private partnerships to fund infrastructure projects. His government contributed to the planning of the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney. However, his administration faced criticism over the widespread availability of poker machines in pubs, which was associated with increased gambling addiction. Carr was re-elected in 1999 and 2003, serving a total of ten years in office, making him the longest-serving premier of New South Wales in terms of consecutive tenure, surpassed only by Henry Parkes. In 2012, following his federal political career, Carr entered the Australian House of Representatives as a senator and served as Minister for Foreign Affairs under Prime Ministers Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd until his retirement after the 2013 federal election. After leaving politics, he was the director of the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney from 2014 to 2019.
