William Slater, born on 18 June 1983, is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played during the 2000s and 2010s. He spent his entire club career with the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League and is widely regarded as the greatest fullback of all time. Slater was known for his exceptional vision, game reading skills, and try-scoring ability. During his career, he played in seven NRL Grand Finals, set the club record for most tries, and holds the NRL record for most tries by a fullback. He scored a total of 190 tries for Melbourne Storm, the third highest in Australian first-grade rugby league history. Slater also achieved significant individual success, winning two premierships, the Clive Churchill Medal twice, and the Dally M Medal. Internationally, he represented Australia and served as captain of the Queensland State of Origin team. In 2008, he was the top try-scorer and player of the tournament at the Rugby League World Cup and was awarded the Golden Boot as the world's best player. After retiring from playing, Slater became the coach of the Queensland Maroons, leading them to victories in the 2022, 2023, and 2025 State of Origin series.
