William James O'Brien, born October 23, 1969, is an American football coach who is currently serving as the head coach at Boston College. His coaching career began in 1993 at Brown University, and he has since accumulated experience coaching within the Atlantic Coast Conference. O'Brien joined the New England Patriots in 2007, eventually taking on roles as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in 2011. He was the head coach at Penn State from 2012 to 2013, leading the team to an 8-4 record in his first season and earning ESPN's National Coach of the Year award. During his tenure with Penn State, O'Brien was considered for NFL head coaching jobs but chose to stay and complete his contract at the university. He then became the head coach of the Houston Texans, a position he held from 2014 until 2020, leading the team to a division title and a playoff appearance. His time with the Texans included a notable divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and a controversial trade of star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. After his departure from the Texans, he was hired as offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2021 and returned to the New England Patriots in 2023 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Following the season, O'Brien was appointed as the head coach at Boston College.
