About Big D
Big D is a song about Dallas, Texas, written by Frank Loesser in 1956 for the musical The Most Happy Fella. It was introduced by Susan Johnson, who performed as Cleo, and Shorty Long, who performed as Herman. The song's refrain spells out Dallas with the lyric Big D, little A, double L, A, S. It gained popularity through multiple recordings in 1956, including a version by Bing Crosby and his son Lindsay Crosby for his radio show, which was later issued on the 2017 CD New Tricks – 60th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. Jo Stafford also recorded the song that same year, and it appeared on a Columbia artists EP titled Hits from The Most Happy Fella. Edmund Hockridge recorded a version for his EP The Most Happy Fella in 1960. In 1961, Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews performed the song on The Garry Moore Show. Their duet was well received and contributed to the development of a 1962 CBS television special, Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, where they reprised their duet.
