Bettye LaVette, born Betty Jo Haskins on January 29, 1946, is an American soul singer with a career spanning several decades. She recorded her first record at the age of sixteen but only gained intermittent recognition until the release of her album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise in 2005, which received widespread critical acclaim and appeared on many critics' 'Best of 2005' lists. Her subsequent album, The Scene of the Crime, debuted at number one on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart and was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 2008 Grammy Awards. LaVette's musical style is characterized by an eclectic blend of genres including soul, blues, rock and roll, funk, gospel, and country music, reflecting her versatile artistry. Throughout her career, she has been widely celebrated and in 2023 was honored with the Legacy of Americana Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards. In 2020, LaVette was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, acknowledging her significant contributions to blues and American music.
