Benjamin Franklin was an American polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Born in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, he became a successful newspaper editor and printer in Philadelphia, publishing The Pennsylvania Gazette at age 23. Franklin was also known for publishing Poor Richard's Almanack under the pseudonym Richard Saunders and for his association with the Pennsylvania Chronicle, a newspaper known for revolutionary sentiments. His early ownership of slaves and subsequent advocacy against slavery reflect his evolving stance on the issue. As a scientist, Franklin made significant contributions to the study of electricity, charted the Gulf Stream, and invented several devices including the lightning rod, bifocals, glass harmonica, and Franklin stove. He founded civic organizations such as the Library Company and Philadelphia's first fire department. Recognized for campaigning for colonial unity, Franklin signed the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris, and the U.S. Constitution. His legacy endures as a key figure in American history and the Enlightenment.
