Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Cardin represented Maryland's 3rd congressional district in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 2007. His political career also includes sixteen years in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served from 1967 to 1987 and was its speaker from 1979 to 1987.
