Barney Frank: podcast appearances and interviews
Former US Congressman
About Barney Frank
Barney Frank was an American politician who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1981 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee from 2007 to 2011. He was a key figure in the development of financial regulation legislation, including the 2010 Dodd–Frank Act, which was implemented as a primary response to the 2007–2008 financial crisis. Frank was born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey, and graduated from Bayonne High School, Harvard College, and Harvard Law School. He began his political career as a political aide before being elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1972, and subsequently to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980, securing re-election with wide margins throughout his tenure. In 1987, Frank publicly came out as gay, becoming the first member of Congress to do so voluntarily. His personal life intersected with his political career when he married his long-time partner, James Ready, in July 2012, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to marry someone of the same sex. Frank chose not to seek re-election in 2012 and was succeeded by Democrat Joe Kennedy III. Throughout his career, he was recognized as a prominent advocate for LGBTQ rights and financial reform.
