Barbara Ellen Kingsolver, born on April 8, 1955, is an American novelist, essayist, and poet known for her works that address social justice, biodiversity, and the relationships between humans and their communities and environments. Her notable publications include The Poisonwood Bible, which tells the story of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's efforts to eat locally. Kingsolver's novels have frequently appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list since 1993. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel Demon Copperhead, making her the first author to win the Women's Prize for Fiction twice, with previous wins for The Lacuna in 2010 and Demon Copperhead. Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including the Dayton Literary Peace Prize's Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award in 2011 and the National Humanities Medal. Raised in rural Kentucky and briefly living in the Congo during her early childhood, she now resides in Virginia’s Appalachia region. Kingsolver pursued degrees in biology, ecology, and evolutionary biology at DePauw University and the University of Arizona, and initially worked as a freelance writer before focusing on novel writing. In 2000, she founded the Bellwether Prize to support literature that promotes social change.
