About Anya Kamenetz

Anya Kamenetz is an American writer, speaker, and reporter based in Brooklyn, New York City. She has served as an education correspondent for NPR, a senior writer for Fast Company magazine, and a columnist for Tribune Media Services. Currently, she is a senior advisor at the Aspen Institute. Kamenetz has authored several books and written widely for publications including New York Magazine, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Salon, Slate, The Nation, and The Forward. Her work has often focused on education and societal issues, exemplified by her 2006 book Generation Debt, which originated from her column for The Village Voice. In 2009, she explored the impact of web-savvy students on higher education in a column and followed with her 2010 book DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs, and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education. She was named a Game Changer in Education by the Huffington Post in 2010. As a fellow at the New America Foundation, Kamenetz authored The Test: Why Our Schools Are Obsessed with Standardized Testing–But You Don’t Have to Be, published in 2015. Her documentary appearances include Generation Next, Default: The Student Loan Documentary, and Ivory Tower. Her published works include The Art of Screen Time, published in 2018, which discusses balancing digital media in family life, and The Stolen Year, published in 2022, examining how COVID-19 affected children's lives. Kamenetz is the daughter of poet and author Rodger Kamenetz and painter and fiction writer Moira Crone. She grew up in Baton Rouge and New Orleans and graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and Yale College in 2002.
