Sir Antony James Beevor, born on 14 December 1946, is a British military historian known for his extensive work on significant 20th century conflicts. Educated at Abberley Hall School, Winchester College, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he initially served in the British Army, commanding a troop of tanks in the 11th Hussars in Germany. In 1970, he left the military to pursue a career in writing. Beevor has held positions as a visiting professor at Birkbeck, University of London, and the University of Kent. His historical publications predominantly focus on the Second World War, the Spanish Civil War, the Russian Revolution, and the Russian Civil War. Among his notable works are Stalingrad, published in 1998, which provides a detailed account of the battle and the experiences of ordinary people involved, and Berlin: The Downfall 1945, published in 2002. The latter became controversial in Russia due to its inclusion of information from former Soviet archives regarding mass rapes carried out by the Red Army in 1945. Beevor’s books have been translated into many languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. Besides authoring books, he has lectured at numerous military establishments across Britain, the United States, Europe, and Australia, and has contributed writings to major newspapers. His work is recognized for its comprehensive research and its focus on human experiences during pivotal historical events.
