Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, was a British politician and military officer who held several key government positions, including Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. He became foreign secretary at the age of 38 and served in that role for most of the Second World War, returning to it in the early 1950s. Eden supported the Conservative Party and succeeded Winston Churchill as its leader, becoming Prime Minister following a general election victory shortly after his appointment as party leader.
