Annika Charlotta Sörenstam, born on 9 October 1970, is a Swedish and American professional golfer recognized as one of the most accomplished female golfers in history. Prior to her retirement at the end of the 2008 season, she secured a total of 96 international professional tournament wins, making her the female golfer with the most victories. Her achievements include winning 72 official LPGA tournaments, of which ten are major championships, along with 24 other international tournaments. In 2003, she completed the career grand slam by winning each of the four major championships during her prime. That same year, she competed in the Bank of America Colonial tournament, becoming the first woman to play in a PGA Tour event since 1945. Sörenstam represented Europe in eight Solheim Cup contests between 1994 and 2007 and was the event's leading points scorer until Laura Davies surpassed her record in 2011. She also served as the captain of the European Solheim Cup team in 2017. Despite retiring from regular competition in 2008, her career earnings remained significant, with over 22 million dollars by the end of 2022, maintaining her position atop the LPGA career money list. After turning 50, she resumed competitive play and achieved a victory at the 2021 U.S. Senior Women's Open. Awarded a record eight Player of the Year titles and six Vare Trophies, she holds various scoring records, including the lowest season scoring average of 68.6969 in 2004. Sörenstam is also notable for being the only female golfer to shoot a 59 in competition and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2021.
