Dame Angela Brigid Lansbury was a British-American-Irish actress and singer whose career spanned eight decades. She appeared in numerous stage and screen roles, earning widespread recognition and multiple awards. Lansbury received six Tony Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2022, as well as six Golden Globe Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award. Her nominations included three Academy Awards, 18 Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Grammy Award. Born into an upper-middle-class family in central London, Lansbury was the daughter of Irish actress Moyna Macgill and English politician Edgar Lansbury. To escape the Blitz, she moved to the United States in 1940 and studied acting in New York City. She began her Hollywood career in 1942 with MGM, establishing herself as a character actress and earning three Oscar nominations for her supporting roles in Gaslight, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Manchurian Candidate. Transitioning to Broadway, Lansbury won four Tony Awards for her performances in musicals such as Mame, Dear World, Gypsy, and Sweeney Todd. She also portrayed Jessica Fletcher in the television series Murder, She Wrote, which earned her four Golden Globes and multiple Emmy nominations.
