Andy Warhol: podcast appearances and interviews
About Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was an American artist and filmmaker born Andrew Warhola Jr. on August 6, 1928. He is widely regarded as the most influential artist of the second half of the 20th century. Warhol's work encompassed multiple media including painting, filmmaking, photography, publishing, and performance art. As a leading figure in the Pop art movement, his art explored the intersections of advertising, consumerism, mass media, and celebrity culture. His use of mechanical reproduction challenged conventional distinctions between high and low culture and helped popularize the phrase fifteen minutes of fame.
Born to working-class Rusyn immigrant parents in Pittsburgh, Warhol started his career as a commercial artist in New York City before transitioning to fine art. Some of his best-known early silkscreen paintings include Campbell's Soup Can, Marilyn Diptych, and Coca-Cola, all created in 1962. In the 1960s, Warhol began producing experimental films such as Blow Job and Empire, along with underground films featuring a rotating group of personalities called Warhol superstars. His studio, known as the Factory, became a vibrant hub for avant-garde experimentation and brought together diverse creative individuals including drag queens, poets, bohemians, and musicians. Warhol also managed the influential rock band the Velvet Underground and participated in multimedia events such as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable.
Following an assassination attempt in 1968, Warhol's Factory evolved into a business enterprise. He founded Interview magazine, authored books including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism, and created series of paintings like Mao, Athletes, and Last Supper. Warhol expanded into television with shows such as Andy Warhol's TV and Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes. He meticulously documented his social life through photography and recordings, which were published posthumously as The Andy Warhol Diaries. Warhol died in 1987 at age 58 due to cardiac arrhythmia after gallbladder surgery.
