Andrew Patrick Wood (January 8, 1966 – March 19, 1990) was an American musician remembered for his influence on the Seattle grunge scene as the lead singer and lyricist for the bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. He co-founded Malfunkshun in 1980 with his older brother Kevin Wood and Regan Hagar. The band was known for their onstage alter ego personas; Wood performed as Landrew the Love Child. Although Malfunkshun released only two songs prior to an extended hiatus, their contributions to the genre are recognized as foundational to the Seattle grunge movement. During his time with Malfunkshun, Wood struggled with drug dependence, which led him to enter rehab in 1985. In 1988, he began collaborating with members of Green River, including Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. This collaboration resulted in the formation of Mother Love Bone in 1988, with the addition of guitarist Bruce Fairweather and drummer Greg Gilmore. The band released an EP titled Shine in 1989 and scheduled their debut album Apple for 1990, supported by a tour. While preparing for this release, Wood sought treatment for his drug issues, entering rehab in 1989. Sadly, he died in Seattle on March 19, 1990, at the age of 24, after being found in a comatose state following a heroin overdose.
