Sir Andrew John Bower Mitchell is a British politician and member of the Conservative Party. He has served as the Member of Parliament for Sutton Coldfield since 2001 and previously represented Gedling from 1987 to 1997. Mitchell has held various governmental roles, including Secretary of State for International Development from 2010 to 2012, and Minister of State for Development and Africa from October 2022 to July 2024. He also served as Deputy Foreign Secretary starting in April 2024. His political career includes serving in the Cabinet and holding positions such as Shadow Foreign Secretary from July to November 2024 and Deputy Foreign Secretary from April 2024. Mitchell was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he studied history and was elected President of the Cambridge Union in 1978. During the coalition government under David Cameron, he held the position of Secretary of State for International Development until 2012, when he resigned amid public pressure related to the Plebgate scandal and returned to the backbenches.
